Joining a First-Year Interest Group (FIG) during fall term is one of the easiest ways to transition to college while staying on track to graduate on time. The philosophy of the FIG program is to help students build an academic home comprised of other first-year students with similar interests, an upper classman peer mentor (FIG Assistant), and a faculty mentor who help the students make connections all across campus.
Each FIG is a unique package of classes organized around an academic theme. To make finding the right FIG for you easier, we place our FIGs into broader categories to help you explore your options.
FIGs in the Culture in Review category examine cultures and subcultures through a discerning lens. By selecting a FIG in this category, you will have the opportunity to ignite your inner activist by rethinking K-12 education, play a key historical figure to better understand the past and how to impact change in the future, and you may also get a chance to participate and plan a large scale art/music even in the fall as part of a FIG project!
The FIGs in the Culture in Review theme are:
- Education Revolution
- Enduring Tensions: America's Consitutional Democracy
- Hidden History
- Hip-Hop & Politics of Race
- Human Possibilities
- Just Futures
- Justice Matters
- Pass the MIC
- Social Progress, Social Change
- Twelve Bars from Freedom
