Joining a First-Year Interest Group (FIG) during fall term is one of the easiest ways to transition to college while staying on track to graduate on time. The philosophy of the FIG program is to help students build an academic home comprised of other first-year students with similar interests, an upper classman peer mentor (FIG Assistant), and a faculty mentor who help the students make connections all across campus.

Each FIG is a unique package of classes organized around an academic theme. To make finding the right FIG for you easier, we place our FIGs into broader categories to help you explore your options.

FIGs in the Breaking Barriers category investigate how different perspectives shape communities. By selecting a FIG in this category, you will have the opportunity to examine personal identity through self-reflection, journaling, and researching how to interpret personal stories, learn how developing face-to-face communication skills can lead to better engagement, affect change and create an impact, and you may also get a chance to participate in service learning as part of a FIG project!
