Welcome to Pre(paration)-Med: Foundations, Research, & Longevity!
Are you a Pre-Med student? Are you interested in pursuing any kind of career in the medical field? Do you feel completely overwhelmed by all the preparation you need to do to get ready for that? This is the FIG for you.
Over the 10 weeks of the Fall term we are going to explore three key pillars for student success in college and future success in the medical field.
Foundations: In these classes we will lay building blocks to assist getting you to the career you are striving towards. How can I have a successful first term? How can you get involved on campus? What careers are open to me? What kind of degree should I go for? (MD, PhD, BSN, etc.) We will be speaking with mentors from around University of Oregon about key professional development steps you can take to get you ready for your future careers.
Research: Another pillar we will explore is focused on medical research. These classes will explore what research is, how it's conducted, and will introduce students to different types of research fields. We will also learn about what kind of research is conducted here at the University of Oregon and how to get involved in research on campus. Most importantly, we will discuss how appreciating and understanding research will make you a better medical professional, regardless of the field or degree you choose.
Longevity: The road to professional medical degrees is a long and often winding road. You are at the beginning of it now, so what do you need to bring with you? In these classes we will explore how to keep your mental and physical well-being safe and healthy as you start working towards your professional goals. We will highlight evidence-based methods for student success inside and outside of the classroom and we will incorporate ideas of health and longevity into our research focused classes. In these combo longevity/research classes, we will talk about the importance of sleep, nutrition, and social engagement for student (and human!) longevity.
