UGST 109 FIG Seminar

 TIME | BUILDING | CRN | 1 Credit

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) seek to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity at a global level. The two courses within this FIG will allow students to “think globally” about SDGs (in PPPM 370) while “acting locally” at the community scale in city planning (in PPPM 205). We will use the city of Eugene as a laboratory to explore commitment to climate action, clean energy, economic growth, sustainable cities and communities, and land use change at a community level. To explore Eugene, we’ll get off campus and explore the city by bicycle, bus, and foot through fun activities and field trips throughout the term. Students will see community-level action on SDGs and gain understanding of where individuals and communities can make a difference locally to progress toward goals.
As part of this FIG, students will get exposed to planning and policy at a global and local level through two PPPM classes.

PPPM 205: Introduction to City Planning

 Social Science (>2) | TIME | BUILDING | CRN | 4 Credits

Introduction to planning, using urban issues as lenses to explore transportation, housing, environment, and social equity as critical elements shaping where and how people live.

PPPM 370: Global Sustainable Development Policy

 Global Perspectives (GP) | TIME | BUILDING | CRN | 4 Credits

Sustainable Development seeks to reconcile the economic, social, and environmental problems we face in a world with constrained resources. To have a broader perspective of what sustainability means, we examine problems through an interdisciplinary lens and investigate how these issues form and possible policy solutions.
