UGST 109 FIG Seminar
Tuesday/Thursday | 16:00-16:50 | 16576 | 1 Credit
This class is about eating disorders. You will learn about what eating disorders are, how eating disorders develop, and bust harmful myths about eating disorders. Eating disorders are far more common than you'd expect, and yet few people (even trained mental health professionals) know about these problems. On top of that though, misinformation about eating disorders, nutrition, and weight loss runs rampant through society. One of the many reasons for the misinformation is that everyone must eat to survive, everyone has a body, and almost everyone has tried adjusting their eating to change their body in some way. Thus, lots of personal anecdotes and beliefs masquerade as generalizable truths--and many of these anecdotes and beliefs are wrong. I want you to leave this class armed with the ability to differentiate fact from fiction when it comes to eating disorders specifically, but also to more broadly evaluate the credibility of the health information that floods social media and public discourse. This class will include lecture-type content about eating disorders and the scientific method, as well as hands-on "being a scientist in your own life" type of experiences where students will investigate the scientific bases (or lack thereof) for claims being made on social media about eating disorders (or health, eating, and wellness more broadly).
