The Science of Stuff FIG Instructor and Assistant

FIG Instructor: Matthias Agne

Matthias Agne

Greetings everyone! My name is Dr. Matthias Agne. I grew up in rural Pennsylvania, have lived in Philadelphia, Chicago, and Germany, and enjoy traveling, playing musical instruments, skiing and hiking. My academic background is in Materials Science and Engineering and our lab in the Chemistry Department at UO works to develop sustainable materials for next-generation technologies, like solid-state batteries, fuel cells, thermoelectrics and quantum devices. We do fundamental science that informs engineering design. I am very excited to lead our FIG, The Science of Stuff: What Materials for Which Applications, that will provide a hands-on introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Materials Science. Materials are my passion, and I am currently leading the development of a new Materials Science and Technology major that is a joint degree program between Chemistry and Physics. It is my goal to inspire a diverse group of energetic problem-solvers to join the charge in tackling global challenges in sustainability. A degree in Materials Science will prepare you for a wide range of industries! One of my favorite parts of science is the connections we make with people along the way. Please feel free to reach out to introduce yourselves at any time, I am happy to talk (Zoom or email) even if you don’t have any specific questions. I look forward to meeting you!

FIG Assistant: Alicia

"Hi! My name is Alicia, and I will be a third year student at UO majoring in chemistry. I’ve lived in Eugene for most of my life, and I hope you love it here as much as I do! I love going for bike rides, going to the river, hiking, trying new restaurants, watching movies, and baking. As I got involved in chemistry research, I found that materials science is super interesting and applicable to a ton of fields, and I began doing research with the Agne Lab. I was in a FIG my first year and loved it, and I’m excited to be a FIG Assistant this fall! Feel free to email if you have any questions, or just to reach out!"
