Science, College, Life! FIG Instructor and Assistant

FIG Instructor: Michael Kellman

Hello everyone!  I'm Michael Kellman, a professor who works at the interface of chemistry and physics – physical chemistry.  In recent years I've become very interested in the challenges facing a student embarking on a career and life based in science.  I'm inspired further by the challenges we have all faced from Covid.  I would like to help people starting out to get on track in making their way in the world!

My scientific interests in recent years have focused on two very different areas:  (1) mysteries of quantum mechanics – Einstein's famous "spooky action at a distance" and Schrodinger's infamous Cat – and (2) molecular modelling of Alzheimer's disease, in the interest of aiding prevention and treatment of this tragedy.

I'm very interested in music, hiking and anything to do with the natural world.  I'm also interested the wider meanings of science, and the interface of science, society, industry, and the economy.  A recent interest is AI and what its human ramifications will be.

My professional background:  UC Berkeley B.S.; University of Chicago Ph.D.; postdoctoral work at UO and Columbia.  I was a professor for 8 years in Boston before moving to UO.

FIG Assistant: Kyle

Hi everyone! My name is Kyle, and I'm from the California Bay Area. I'm currently a second-year student here at UO studying for a Biology degree, but I'm also considering getting a double major by adding either Neuroscience or Human Physiology!

Some of my hobbies include volleyball, playing my saxophone/clarinet, and playing Dungeons and Dragons! I also spend a lot of my free time playing games and watching movies with my friends. Some of my favorite music artists include Laufey, grentperez, Tyler, the Creator and wave to earth! If you have any music recommendations, please feel free to let me know, since I love listening to new music.

I'm super excited to meet you all! Being a part of a FIG community was one of my most memorable experiences during my first term at UO, and excited to help you all have a wonderful first term here at UO. If you have any questions about UO or FIGs, please feel free to email me!
