PD 101 Introduction to Product Design

Tuesday/Thursday | 16:00-17:20 | 15719 | 4 Credits

The process of design that results in the generation of meaningful, functional and beautiful objects that improve our daily lives, requires a wide variety of problem solving and creative thinking skills. Product Design involves understanding the diverse nature of human needs, how cultural context can change these needs, and how creative thinking and aesthetic choices can aid in meeting these needs. Successfully designed objects influence our everyday lives through improved function, form, usability and environmental considerations. We all have the experience of owning a favorite mug, and how sad it was when it broke, or being late for an early morning meeting because of an incorrectly set alarm clock. A product reflects not only the people who designed and made it, but also reflects on us: how we behave as users, consumers and members of society. Design is an expression of ourselves, and the objects we choose to surround ourselves with communicate who we are to others in a multitude of ways. Designers uncover the needs of society and generate solutions that are often taken for granted. They employ research methods and processes to pinpoint cultural needs and address solutions through concept and idea generation, prototyping, and testing. In this course, you will learn about the influence product design has on our society, culture, environment, and technological development. You will be introduced to different processes and methods of how designers practice in the various fields within product design and how they approach different problems. You will also be introduced to perspectives on what constitutes ‘good designs’, to observe the products surrounding us more critically, and to make smarter choices to create a better environment.
