Hello! My name is Anthony Whipple, and I will be the Instructor for our class The Hidden Curriculum: Navigating the transition from service to higher education. We will work together to build your knowledge around the higher education system, and develop connections with the offices that run them.
I graduated from the University of Oregon in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Earth Science. I worked for a while as a Materials Scientist before returning to Western Oregon University to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching in 2021. I taught AP Chemistry and Physics while working on my PhD in Education and Leadership at Pacific University, where I studied Veterans in Higher Education. I am currently working on my dissertation.
I retired from the Army this year, with multiple deployments and rotations interrupting my attempts to earn an education. These personal struggles along with seeing my friends navigate the same challenges led me to wanting to study the transition out of service. I have helped develop advising programs for military connected students, as well as trained others on the unique needs of this population. I am passionate about removing barriers for military connected students, in order to help them be successful in whatever they aim for.
In my off time, I spend too much money restoring classic cars, and racing track days on my motorcycle at Portland International Raceway. I also enjoy biking along the river, and riding on forest roads on my other motorcycle.
If you want to talk about the class or just talk to another vet, feel free to email or stop by my office in Tykeson Hall!
