I am a professor of philosophy who works on issues of animal and environmental ethics using an ecofeminist pragmatist perspective. I regularly teach classes on food ethics, ecofeminism, human nature, and American pragmatism. I live with two Australian Shepherds--Kira (named for a Star Trek character) and Scully (named for an X-files character). My early work on utopia mixes well with science fiction as ways to help us envision different possible futures. I am particularly excited to teach this FIG, Digging into Hunger. My work challenges notions of human exceptionalism and superiority and I argue that humans need to acknowledge, and work within the limits of, our shared interdependence with the rest of nature.
My name is Eve Posner (she/her), and I will be the FA for the Digging into Hunger FIG this year. I am a senior at UO, and I’m from outside of Washington D.C., specifically Arlington, Virginia. I've been working with the FIG program for the past two years, serving as the FA first for Telling Power and then for Bella Italia. Through the course of my studies as a Global Studies major with a Food Studies minor, I've become passionate about addressing food insecurity and hunger through grassroots outreach and policy reform. I am really looking forward to introducing members of the FIG to community-based anti-hunger initiatives in Eugene, including the Student Food Pantry, where I've been a volunteer for the past year.
I love UO's beautiful surroundings and laid-back vibe. On campus, one of my favorite places is the Pioneer Cemetery because it is a great place to take a breath and enjoy the towering fir trees. When I have a little spare time, I like to take film photos, grab coffee at Espresso Roma, or go to the Saturday Market. This spring I had the opportunity to study abroad in Siena, Italy, and I had a truly unforgettable experience, which I would be happy to talk about if studying abroad is something you're thinking about doing during your time at UO.
I was in a FIG during my first year, and I found it to be a very fun and engaging way to get acquainted with UO. My FA was a really valuable resource for all kinds of questions about life at UO, and I hope that I can serve that role for you. Please feel free to send me an email this summer if you've got any questions or concerns about the FIG, first-year life, or transitioning to college. I am looking forward to working with this FIG in the fall!
