"I love being an FA because of the people I have met through my job. I feel like I am part of a community of driven, caring students who support each other, and the faculty who are part of this program show genuine care for the students they serve. Being a part of such a fantastic community makes the job feel less like work and more like fun!" --FA for International Outlook

FYE Proposals 2020

University of Oregon faculty are encouraged to submit proposals for new First-Year Experiences (FYEs). Proposals for 2020 are due by Monday, February 10th. Faculty from all disciplines are welcome to submit.

FYEs create a space for freshmen to explore an academic topic with depth from an interdisciplinary approach in their first year. A 20 member cohort participates in several courses together during the school year, where students begin making connections between classes, to faculty and peers, and to vital resources that set them up for success beyond their first year. First-Year Experiences are flexible and open to innovation – faculty are encouraged to contact the First-Year Programs Director, Amy Hughes Giard, with ideas. All faculty who have not taught an FYE are required to meet with Director Hughes Giard prior to submitting a proposal. Amy can be contacted through email at agiard@uoregon.edu or over the phone at 541-346-1079. For more information, see the FIG Proposal form: PDF or Word

Learn More about Teaching a FIG

For me, one of strongest elements of participating as a FIG Instructor is the opportunity to work with and get to know students beyond the classroom context.  I learn from my FIG students and this informs my instruction.  It is an honor to be a part of the beginning of their undergraduate experience at UO.  In addition, working with the FA to facilitate the FIG is collaboration, mentoring, and...fun teaching. --Faculty for Education Revolution
