From War to Peace Faculty and FIG Assistant

FIG Faculty: Katya Hokanson - Department of Russian and East European Studies, College of Arts and Sciences

Katya Hokanson is Associate Professor of Russian and Comparative Literature at the University of Oregon, and received her Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures at Stanford University and her A. B. in Russian from Williams College. She greatly enjoys introducing students to the awesomeness that is Russian literature and, through the College Connections class, helping them adjust to college life and college academics. Her academic work focuses primarily on nineteenth century Russian literature, a subject on which she has published a book, Writing at Russia's Border (University of Toronto Press), and quite a few articles. She is currently writing a second book on Russian women writer-travelers in Central Asia and the Russian Far East. She has served as head of Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies at the University of Oregon. She and her family very much enjoy living in Oregon and also traveling to new places.

Quinn Gulka
FIG Assistant: Quinn Gulka

Hello everyone! My name is Quinn Gulka and I will be your FIG Assistant for From War to Peace this upcoming fall term. I’m a Sophomore studying Political Science, and I’m considering a minor in Philosophy. I took this FIG in the fall of my Freshman year and loved it so much I decided to become a FIG Assistant. This will be my first year as an FA and I’m excited to discuss some really interesting topics with you all.

I was actually born and raised in Eugene, so in a way, I’ve always been a Duck. I grew up watching Duck football games at Autzen Stadium, hiking Spencer's Butte with my friends and going to the Saturday Market on sunny days. If you ever have any questions about Eugene or want to find some cool spots, I’d love to show you around!

I am an avid reader and love anything in the Political / Social Sciences realm. I’m really into Philosophy, which is why I enjoy Russian Literature, as Russian novels explore some really thought-provoking questions. I also enjoy running, so if you ever see me jogging around campus don’t hesitate to say hi!

I’m excited to work with everyone this fall as you begin your journey at the University of Oregon. I had such a wonderful experience through this FIG and want to help create a wonderful experience for all who register for From War to Peace. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out! See you in the Fall!
