FIG Instructor: Steven Brence - Department of Philosophy, College of Arts and Sciences

I grew up primarily in Portland, and attended the University of Oregon for both undergraduate and graduate school. I taught Philosophy at Oregon State for a number of years before returning to Oregon about ten years ago. I am now the Senior Instructor of Philosophy and Director of Undergraduate Studies, while teaching many philosophy classes throughout the year. My interests outside of UO include film and music (especially post-punk, 1950s and ‘60s jazz, and just about anything experimental in nature). I play bass guitar and am somewhat a scholar of classical film noir.

FIG Assistant: Whitney

Hi! My name is Whitney, my pronouns are she/her, and I am the FA for Thinking Media. I am a Journalism major with a minor in Psychology, and this is my first year as an FA, so I am really excited to welcome my first group of students! As a Journalism major, I am especially interested in storytelling and media, which makes me excited to be part of the Thinking Media FIG. I was born and raised in the small town of Winston, Oregon, before moving to Eugene to attend the University of Oregon, and I have really enjoyed getting to explore everything Eugene has to offer. In my free time, I enjoy going on runs, exploring new places around town, watching movies with friends, or staying in with a good book, so if you have any favorite books or movie recommendations, I would love to hear them! I was also a member of the Thinking Media FIG during my first year at UO, and it was such a great experience that I wanted to become more involved with the program. I am so excited to experience the FIG again from a new perspective and help welcome all of you this fall. I can't wait to meet everyone!
