FIG College Connections Faculty: Matthias Vogel - German and Scandinavian Studies, College of Arts and Sciences

Matthias Vogel is a native of Mainz, Germany, the city where Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1450 C.E. Matthias was always interested in reading, intellectual history, and at the Johannes Gutenberg Universität-Mainz, he studied English, French,  German, and business. Matthias came to the United States in 1993 as a student and loved it so much in Eugene that he never left. He continued his studies at the UO where he later became an instructor in the German and Scandinavian department. He is the Language Coordinator in the department and teaches language and language pedagogy classes, classes on the Holocaust and multicultural issues, and food studies classes. He is the director of the Global Engagement Academic Residential Community which is housed in the Global Scholars Hall where he also lives permanently as Faculty in Residence. When you don’t find him in the GSH, teaching or grading, you’re likely to find him on his bike on some of the wonderful bike paths in Eugene.

Sammy Bazant
FIG Assistant: Sammy Bazant

Hi all! I am Sammy and I will be the FIG Assistant for “Money and Me.” This will be my third year as an FA and first year with this FIG. In past years, I have worked with the Arabic Studies department’s “Annabi Arabi” FIG, but I am excited for the opportunity to work with a new FIG!

I grew up in the Portland area and have loved studying here in Eugene for all of the great outdoor activities — from hiking to skiing — that are available in our backyard. I am a senior studying Entrepreneurship through the Honors Program in the College of Business and minoring in Arabic Studies.

I have loved the variety of opportunities to get involved at the U of O and have found great experiences and friends in a number of places. Notably, I am a Senior Manager with the Oregon Consulting Group, a student-run consulting firm housed in the Lundquist College of Business, and a member of the UO Alpine Ski Team. In my free time, I love cooking, visiting new cafes, and being outside.

I am excited to work with you as you begin your own journey at the U of O! If you registered for “Money and Me” I would love to get to know you a little before fall — send me your name and a little about yourself/your interests via email (sbazant@uoregon.edu). Additionally, check out the short summer assignment below — let me know if you have any questions or want some guidance. Have a great summer and I look forward to meeting you!
