FIG College Connections Faculty: Leslie McLees - Geography, College of Arts and Sciences

I received my PhD in Geography at the University of Oregon in 2012, where my research focused on the integration between urban agriculture and urban development in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Understanding how people perceive places, whether their hometown or distant corners of the earth, and how that translates into our actions towards those places informs every class I teach. Courses I regularly teach include World Regional Geography, Geography of Sub-Saharan Africa, Geography of the US and Canada, Food Systems, and a course called the Professional Geographer, which is meant to help students understand the value of their college degree and get ready for the world beyond! I am currently the undergraduate coordinator and advisor in the geography department.

Outside of work, I enjoy being outside, especially with my kids, while hiking, gardening, blowing bubbles, or throwing rocks in the river.

Allie Alferez
FIG Assistant: Arielle Alferez

Hello friends, my name is Arielle. I am a Geography and Spatial Data Science double major entering my senior year. I am from Portland, OR and have loved getting to know Eugene over the past few years. In and around Eugene I love hiking, eating and skiing. On campus, I am a member of the Geography Club and UO SNOW, the freestyle ski/board team.

This FIG is about you and your first term in college, so let’s make it work for you! Geography has been a great path which has allowed me to explore the inner workings of our planet and how organisms are connected through their location. I am excited to share and explore the many sides of Geography with you all in the fall!
