FIG College Connections Faculty: Alison Schmitke - Department of Education Studies, College of Education

Education:

B.A. Willamette University, 1994

M.A. Portland State University, 1996

Ph.D. University of Alabama, 2008

Alison Schmitke taught high school social studies and language arts for eight years.  She started her career in Beaverton, OR teaching at Merlo Station High School.  Alison then moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama and was a teacher at Central High School and Bryant High School.

At the university, she teaches teachers. Alison’s focus is on helping future teachers understand the role of teacher and student subjectivities in the classroom and how this informs teaching practices. Alison’s research interests are grounded in a feminist post-structuralist theoretical framework as she examines the intersections of gender, race, class, and identity in classrooms and schools.

For the Department of Education Studies, Alison teaches undergraduate and graduate courses. She is also the undergraduate degree program director for the Educational Foundations major.

FIG Assistant: Jessie Dunn

Hi everybody, hope you all are well in this crazy time! My name is Jessie and I will be the FIG Assistant for “Education Revolution.” My freshman year, I was also in “Education Revolution” and loved it! So, I am more than happy to be back this year as a FA and have the opportunity to support you during your first (exciting!) year as a new Duck as we explore some of the topics I am passionate about.

I am originally from Hawai’i on the island of O’ahu and swam a little bit to get to Oregon, but I have loved every moment of my time here at the UO. I am currently a sophomore studying Public Relations with a minor in Special Education. In my spare time, you can find me working at the UO DuckCall Center, tutoring at the CTL Clinic, participating in Greek life events, exploring the beautiful EUG with friends, or scrolling on Pinterest in a worm hole for new recipes, décor, crafts, you name it.

If you registered for “Education Revolution,”  I would love to get you know you a little bit before fall— send me an email with your name, where you are from, some of your interests, and one thing you are excited/nervous about coming into this year with your go-to emoji. Mine is definitely the party-hat emoji!

So excited to meet you all and feel free to send me any questions you may have along the way or would like to chat all fun things college. Have an awesome summer!
