Our world is full of packages. They lure customers, protect objects from breaking, and are ultimately discarded. So, what does good package design consist of? How can packaging be more ecological? What functions do packages need to serve? And how do different cultures package similar items? This course will seek to investigate these questions and more delving deeply into the concepts surrounding packaging through readings, research, fieldwork, discussions, and the design and creation of packages for different items and materials. You will learn how to work with package materials, perform tests, and analyze existing packages so that your own designs are well considered. This course will help develop your 2 dimensional graphic design skills as well as 3 dimensional prototyping skills. You will move beyond initial assumptions or obvious solutions to create package designs that are more sustainable, beautiful, robust, and artistic.
