What is Common Reading?
UO Common Reading is a campus-wide conversation around a shared selection, often a book, as a focus of campus-wide discussion and activities. UO Common Reading shares stories and experiences that matter to the entire UO community and is part of the intellectual entrée into the life of the university for first-year students. The program presents and promotes opportunities to meet authors, artists, and researchers, have lively discussions with peers, and opportunities to experience the selection inside and outside of the classroom. Shared stories create community, enrich curriculum, and enhance research engagement.
UO Common Reading a signature program of the First-Year Experience offered at the UO. First-Year Experience offers resources and curriculum that seek to make incoming students’ transition to the University of Oregon seamless, substantial, and rewarding. Our unit offers a variety of First-Year Experiences (FYEs) to meet the needs of each first-year student, all designed to engage students in their academics, provide them with support from peer-mentors and faculty, and assist them in exploring university resources.
Common Reading Student Coordinator
The student coordinator position offers the opportunity to be a creative and participatory leader in a signature program of the University of Oregon. The year-long Common Reading Student Coordinator works collaboratively with UO Common Reading and First-Year Program staff to support the daily administration of UO Common Reading. Design, communication, clerical, and administrative tasks are core components of this position.
NOTE: Applicants must be available to work with the Common Reading Program during summer term.
Student Coordinator Responsibilities and Duties (online* and in-person)
Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring
- Monitor and respond to email and Teams messaging
- Create, edit, monitor, and update social media, website, and other digital content
- Attend weekly team meetings/check-ins
- Attend and participate in advisory committee meetings
- Assist staff in notetaking and simple data analysis
- Track and monitor detailed information in spreadsheets and Microsoft Office OneDrive files
- Support and represent UO Common Reading at trainings and special events, including IntroDUCKtion, Week of Welcome, book distributions, and other outreach opportunities
- Collaborate with campus partners
COMPENSATION AND HOURS
The student coordinator will be paid $15.00 per hour and work an average of 10-12 hours per week starting in Summer Term 2022 (June 2022).

Qualifications
- Sophomore standing or above by Fall 2022
- Nimble, flexible thinking and organizational skills
- Strong written and verbal communication targeted to other students as well as to faculty and staff
- Ability to work within groups as well as be self-directed and self-motivated
- Ability to understand complex conversations and extract key ideas; asks questions for clarification
- Applicants for the Student Coordinator position must be available to work during summer term
- Preferred:
- some experience with Microsoft Office, including OneDrive, Outlook, Teams, and Excel
- some experience with Canva, InDesign, linktree, Instagram, or related design/social media tools
Common Reading Peer Mentor
The year-long peer mentor position offers exceptional undergraduate students the opportunity to be leaders and mentors to first-year and transfer students participating in the First-Year Experience (FYE) Canvas Community. The FYE Canvas Community is a year-long digital space for first-year and transfer students that guides them through resources, activities, and discussions designed each term to help students make connections and achieve success in their first year at the University of Oregon. All first-year and transfer students are automatically enrolled in their community and they engage voluntarily.
Common Reading Peer Mentors assist in the development, planning, and instruction of the content within the Canvas Community. Common Reading Peer Mentors organize educational and social opportunities to better acquaint their students with each other, faculty members, and the University. The Peer Mentors works collaboratively with UO Common Reading and First-Year Program staff.
Common Reading Peer Mentor Responsibilities and Duties (online* and in-person)
Fall, Winter, and Spring
- Post regular announcements in the Canvas Community sites
- Monitor and respond to discussion board
- Help students make connections to faculty, departments, units, and various resources
- Develop, edit, and update course content
- Assist in creating and monitoring social media content
- Attend weekly team meetings/check-ins
- Host at least one event each term and support related Common Reading/FYE events
- Host regular office hours and/or interactive sessions in person or remotely
- Be open to meeting with students one on one and providing resources for needed support
- Collaborate with campus partners
COMPENSATION AND HOURS
The peer mentor will be paid $15.00 per hour and work an average of 4-6 hours per week starting in Fall Term 2022 (September 2022).
