This FIG will consider how science stories are presented by the popular media, and how a person with or without a science education can analyze and make informed decisions about scientific issues that impact society.

Students will learn and be actively mentored in data-driven pedagogical theories and meta-cognitive techniques to enhance their ability to learn and teach science and hone their problem-solving skills. Applications of theory and practice problems will be drawn from the chemistry lab and lecture courses.

This FIG analyzes the social constructions of race and gender in the United States, providing historical background and contemporary examples on both subjects. In ES 101, we will focus on the social oppression of marginalized American minority groups. WGS 101 surveys the experience of women and LGBT Americans in the same respect. Finally, during ES 199, we will draw connections between the two courses and collaborate on methods to navigate your first term of college.
