Camisha Russell grew up in Washington State. She earned her BA at American University in Washington, DC. Before attending graduate school, she served as a Peace Corps Volunteer for the Girls’ Education and Empowerment program in Togo, West Africa. She earned an MA in Philosophy at the University of Memphis and received her PhD from Penn State University in 2013. Her primary research and teaching interests are in Critical Philosophy of Race, Feminist Philosophy, and Bioethics. Her first book, The Assisted Reproduction of Race (Indiana University Press) came out at the beginning of this year. Professor Russell joined the Philosophy faculty at the University of Oregon in 2017. When not on campus, she enjoys the company of her energetic and loquacious 3-1/2 year old, Addae. Up until the year she became a mother, Professor Russell had visited more countries than she was years old. Now she has a little catching up to do.

Pearl

FIG Assistant: Pearl Vermilyea

Hi everyone! My name is Pearl and I will be the FIG assistant for "Brilliant Imperfections" with Professor Camisha Russell. I am going into my fourth year at the University of Oregon and I am majoring in psychology with a minor in Spanish and possibly disabilities studies. I was in the "Brilliant Imperfections" FIG my freshman year, and I am so excited to be returning as an assistant.

I am from San Francisco, California, and love living in Eugene because of its beautiful seasons, yummy food, and countless outdoor activities. I have really enjoyed my time at U of O so far and have made great friends. Along with the FYE program, I have joined the Kappa Delta Sorority and the "Student's for Choice" club. Clubs are a great way to get to know people with common interests and partake in amazing activities. On-campus, you will usually find me studying at the EMU with a Starbucks in hand, or if it's a nice day, reading on the grass.

I became a FIG assistant because I wanted to support freshmen through the challenging transition into the college lifestyle. I can't wait to get to know everyone and build an awesome FIG community. Enjoy the rest of your summer and see you in the Fall!
