FIG College Connections Faculty: Paula Ellister - Romance Languages, College of Arts and Sciences
Welcome to the UO! My name is Paula Ellister.

You will be students in my Spanish 101 class this fall. This course is designed for students with no previous or up to two years of high-school experience. Span 101 marks the beginning of your journey as a bilingual person and will allow you to form friendships with the people in our classroom and connect with the Spanish-speaking world around us. In addition to the Span 101 class, we will also meet together more informally for one hour weekly to learn more about the UO and the Spanish-speaking community in Eugene/Springfield and Oregon. With the help of Nhi, our phenomenal Fig Assistant, we will interact in English, Spanish and Spanglish with each other and with the members of our community. There will be visits to local businesses that serve the Spanish-speaking community in Eugene/Springfield, a walking tour of street art by Spanish-speaking artists, a visit to the UO Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and more.

My passions are hiking, cooking and spending time with my family. You can find me most afternoons at Mt. Pisgah with my husband or one of my sons. I have three sons who will all be in college this fall. My youngest son will be a freshman, so I understand and congratulate you on all the work you have done to be a student at the UO but am aware that you likely still have many questions and concerns about university life. Don't hesitate to reach out to me for any reason, academic or personal. If I don't have an answer, I can point you in the right direction.

FIG Assistant: Nhi Duong

¡Hola! My name is Nhi and I am so excited to work with you all in the fall!

I am from Tigard, OR, which is about 20 minutes away from Portland. I am going into my senior year and am majoring in Business Administration, concentrating in Marketing, and minoring in Spanish. My favorite thing about being a Spanish minor is getting the opportunity to learn more about the culture of Spanish speaking countries and its history!

I love baking, cooking, and spending time with my friends. My favorite things to do with my friends is go on long drives or go on hikes. There are so many things you can do in nature in Oregon! We also love to study at the EMU or at coffee shops.

Going into college, I was so nervous and had so many questions, so I am so excited that I get to help you all enter your freshman year! Please don’t hesitate to text or email me with any questions you may have!
